Changing the color of your hair is often a fun experience, but people with dark hair know that doing so doesn't come without challenges.

Some dyes can leave your hair with a flat, one-dimensional color. This dye kit is formulated to give you a blend of tones and highlights for a more natural black shade. Black hair color holds best onto strands that are healthy and not damaged. This is difficult if you find yourself in a cycle of heat styling and constant dyeing. For a gentler option free of many of hair dye's bothersome and potentially irritating side effects, turn to this Garnier permanent color, a top performer in GH Beauty Lab testing. Then if you like it, it will be easy to maintain on your own by following the instructions for a root application in your color kit. The best hair dye for black hair is one that is specifically formulated for dark hair. These dyes contain a higher volume of developer and are designed to lift the natural pigment in dark hair.

Same as for the makeup, black hair can quite change how you perceive your features and hairstyle, and you may not be as fond as you were of your old haircut once the new color has kicked in. In that case, you can always experiment with hair extensions to get a natural finish whilst switching things up. Regardless of the original hair color, applying permanent deep-black colorants to your hair will color every single hair deep-black. Mastering the black art requires keeping the hair shiny and free of visible roots. Beware that maintaining the magic allure of black hair requires quite a bit of effort, but is simple enough once you know how.

Additionally, use your hot tools on the lowest temperature setting and pass through each section of hair once to avoid frying your hair. This vibrant hair dye promises an intense look and a smooth finish. But to make sure your strands are extra protected, try mixing in a bit of conditioner to keep your locks extra nourished while you're applying the color.

The good news is that the process for subtle color changes (e.g., cool tones) is extremely easy and non-damaging to the hair (even the darkest shades) in the vast majority of cases. If your hair is super dark, you’ll have to work hard to lighten your dark hair enough to get bold bright colors that last on darker hair (unless you’re into temporary color). If you’re not sure if you’re ready for black hair, go into it slowly. Start with some low-lights that are two or three shades darker than your current hair and see how you feel about it.

Perkins concurs, pointing to products like Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss and Madison Reed Color Therapy Masks as easy at-home fixes for fading hair. “They not only put tone back into the hair when it starts to fade or lose shine from coloring, but prevent that fading from happening in the first place,” she says. While they may seem like a viable solution in the short term, Rae assures us that the damage they cause, such as turning the hair dry and brittle, can actually create long-term issues. "Because they interact poorly with professional products," even a color correction may result in multiple rounds and added stress to your already vulnerable strands, she says.

The base color of your black hair will influence the vibrancy of the dye, but even without bleaching, a noticeable change can be achieved. However, this will depend on what color you’re trying to dye your hair. You can always dye your dark hair a darker shade of red, brown or black depending on your starting hair color. But we know you’re probably wanting something a little more fun than a similar (but darker) hue of your natural color. That’s where you’ll want to look towards semi-permanent hair colors that’ll tint hair fun shades of red, blue and purple without hair bleaching. If you dye your hair without bleaching, the color may not appear as vibrant.

The natural pigment in dark hair, such as black or brown, is harder to lift than lighter hair colors. However, there are options for dyeing dark hair without bleach, such as using a high-lift color or a hair dye specifically formulated for dark hair. There are various no-bleach hair dyes suitable for coloring black or dark hair. Temporary hair dyes and color waxes/creams are excellent options for those who want to avoid damage while experimenting with new colors.

They can provide a noticeable tint, especially under sunlight, giving your virgin hair a new appearance. The first option for coloring dark hair without bleach is to use a temporary hair color that’s made to work with a dark base color. These hair dyes are specifically formulated to be vibrant and true-to-color without having to lighten your dark strands prior. They’re also super convenient for experimenting, planning a Halloween costume or trying on a new hair look without the commitment since this type of hair dye washes out.

Dyeing black hair can be a striking way to switch up your style and add some vibrancy. Whether you want to go for a bold and dramatic look or simply cover up gray hair, dyeing your black hair yourself is easier than you might think. However, the process can be a bit different from dyeing hair of other colors due to the darker starting point. In this article, we will dive into the steps and considerations necessary for dyeing black hair successfully.

How to Care for Black Hair Color

Most black hair dyes claim to offer 100% grey hair coverage, which may not be the case. That said, it can help to check the previous customer reviews to see whether the dye lives up to its claims. If you find it challenging to find the right hair color, you can ask your salon professional to help you choose the best black hair for your skin tone. The permanent hair color by Revlon is the best overall product on our list. We love it because it’s formulated with Keratin and silk amino acids, which work together to give silky and well-conditioned hair.

Consider the look you want to achieve and choose a color that complements your skin tone. If you want a subtle change or coverage for gray hair, a semi-permanent or demi-permanent color might be suitable. For a more dramatic transformation, permanent hair dye can deliver the desired results. Select the colors based on the hair dye packaging or consult a professional if unsure.

If you’re in a hurry and are interested in knowing the best hair dye, we picked the Revlon Permanent Hair Color as our best overall Black Hair Dye. We love it because it’s infused with Keratin and Silk Amino Acids to nourish and condition your hair. With over 50 shades to choose from, this collection from L’Oréal Paris has been a mainstay for the brand since 1973.

On top of this, your hair may fade after a while if you don’t take good care of it. You’ll need to use color-safe hair products like this one, which tend to cost more than non color-safe hair products. When you get ready for your appointment, come in with clean, product-free hair, Aronson says. "Otherwise they may have to wash your hair before they apply the color," she explains. Clean hair is like a clean canvas, allowing the stylist to apply the proper ingredients to get you lightened in a healthy way. The healthier the hair, the better chance you'll have of lightening it.

Because there are so many variables in hair color, you may not end up with the exact shade you see in the picture. For example, if that boxed hair dye doesn’t turn out well, you may have to turn to a professional to fix it. They will probably charge you extra because they aren’t just dyeing hair, they are working with store-bought hair dye on top of it and they tend to hate that. During this time, you can just let your natural roots grow out without dyeing them, then cut off the black hair when your hair is long enough to do so. But your hair is going to look terrible for a while if you go this route. This is what I eventually did and I felt ugly AF for about a year.

The key to achieving these colors with salon-quality results is the method you use. I've been a freelance writer for over a decade, specializing in the spa, wellness, and beauty niches. I've also worked professionally for years in a brick and mortar business in the spa industry.

House of Cards season 1 Wikipedia

of house of cards

Also returning is Jayne Atkinson as the Underwood’s eternally tormented (former) Secretary of State, Catherine Durant. In this previous trailer, we first learned the final fate of the show’s former star and main character in Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood. Our emphasis on final is quite purposeful, since the trailer reveals the show’s post-Spacey strategy of killing off Frank. (It’s not a spoiler if the show is promoting that narrative.) We see Claire standing over Frank’s grave throwing figurative and literal shade, almost like a demented Machiavellian reversal of the scene in Forrest Gump at Jenny’s grave. Bolstered by strong performances -- especially from Kevin Spacey -- and surehanded direction, House of Cards is a slick, engrossing drama that may redefine how television is produced. With Frank out of the picture, Claire Underwood steps fully into her own as the first woman president, but faces formidable threats to her legacy.

Restarting production

Secretary of State Durant also comes within the Shepherds' sphere of influence, and they persuade her to speak with prosecutors investigating the Underwoods as the Shepherds become increasingly distant from Claire. As Durant's testimony proves more threatening, Claire and Jane Davis plot to assassinate her, but she fakes her death and flees the country. Following Durant's fake death, Claire and President Petrov forge a deal on Syria.

Seasons

The up-and-coming Aussie actor will reportedly join the cast as a series regular. Fern was rumored to join the cast earlier as a potential love interest for Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood before the star’s own proverbial house of cards collapsed. However, other than the role’s “modified” regular status, no other details have been revealed about Fern’s character. Thus, it will be interesting to see if the previously rumored dynamic sticks, only minus Frank, obviously. Underwood begins a symbiotic, and ultimately sexual, relationship with Zoe Barnes, a young political reporter, secretly feeding her damaging stories about his political rivals to sway public opinion as needed. Meanwhile, he manipulates Peter Russo, a troubled alcoholic congressman from Pennsylvania, into helping him undermine Walker's pick for Secretary of State, Senator Michael Kern.

Claire urges Frank to use a heavier hand in the situation, and they decide to fight back by creating chaos. Frank addresses the public declaring that the nation is at total war, ordering the full force of the military be used to combat global terrorism regardless of the cost. The season ends with Frank and Claire watching the live execution of the hostage together, and Claire breaking the fourth wall for the first time by looking into the camera along with Frank.

House of Cards Season 2 Review: Episodes 4-6

After sending a copy of Frank's audio and letter opener to Claire, Doug visits her in the Oval Office where he admits that he killed Frank because he was undermining his own legacy. Doug threatens and wounds Claire with the letter opener, but when he draws back, she grabs it and stabs him in the stomach. As he lies bleeding on the floor, she covers his mouth and suffocates him, completely unaware that, thanks to Doug, journalist Janine Skorsky is going to expose her crimes. The Shepherds decide to influence Claire by other means, including through a Supreme Court justice they convince her to nominate. They and Seth Grayson also develop a mobile application which can secretly be used to monitor the user's activity, including their location.

What can we expect from House Of Cards season 3?

Nine weeks after the unresolved election, the Twelfth Amendment is invoked, with the vote being put up to members of Congress. During a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus, cracks begin to appear in Conway's façade as he loses his cool. In spite of this, Frank's own baggage and 12% approval rating only allows him a tie with Conway in the House, while Claire manages to secure the Senate vote, becoming Acting President of the United States. In light of the tie, Claire orders a special election for Ohio and Tennessee. Meanwhile, Jane Davis, a low-ranking Commerce Department official who has a wide-ranging network of connections and influence, begins working closely with the Underwoods.

In the quaint burb of Montrose sits the nation's oldest children's bookstore, established by mom/artist Jane Humphrey in 1966. A young regular wrote a letter to the "LA Times" pleading for someone to save the store. That someone ended up being her parents as the note made them realize how important it was to their children and the community. The Palacios run it to this day, stocking books for every stage of childhood and parenting, stuffed animals, and gifts. “Doug’s whole season is dedicated to protecting this man’s legacy and trying to clear his name. The irony of it all is that’s what he’s doing all season,” Kelly tells The Hollywood Reporter of his character’s season six mission to save Frank’s reputation.

Frank resigns as president, leaving Claire as the 47th president of the United States. The two await the proper moment for Claire to pardon him. This comes in the form of a military special operations unit finding and taking out the leader of ICO, which moves media focus away from Frank. Standing in the Oval Office, Claire appears to reconsider pardoning Frank, and ignores multiple concerned calls from him regarding the matter. The season ends with Claire ignoring Frank's call, then breaking the fourth wall to tell the viewers, "My turn."

The writers decided to kill Frank offscreen and, in a clip meant to fill viewers in before watching the season, it’s revealed that Claire had her ex-president husband disgracefully buried next to his father in Gaffney, instead of Arlington. To Doug, that is the first in a series of missteps taken by Claire, a woman who is dead-set on ruining the man Doug would die for and the legacy they had built. The series ended with the last living man who knew all of the Underwood secrets bleeding out on the Oval Office carpet and dying in Claire’s arms.

There’s a million things that go through your head and it was difficult. I can’t imagine Doug Stamper’s part would have been this big had that not happened, but I would never in a million years wish harm or ill will upon anyone to greater or further myself as an actor. As always, on House of Cards, whatever they give me, I’m grateful. I’ve always been so grateful with everything they’ve written for that character and to do it in such an interesting way, I’m just grateful. Those guys are incredible writers and to get to say those words is a great honor.

Underwood eventually has Kern replaced with his own choice, Senator Catherine Durant. Underwood also uses Russo in a plot to end a teachers' strike and pass an education bill, which improves Underwood's standing with Walker. Because the new Vice President is the former Governor of Pennsylvania, a special election is to be held for his successor. Underwood helps Russo get clean and props up his candidacy, but later uses sex worker Rachel Posner to break his sobriety and trigger his downfall shortly before the election. When Russo decides to come clean about his role in Underwood's schemes, Frank kills Russo and stages his death as a suicide.

Can You Really Have 20-Plus Credit Cards at the Same Time?

of house of cards

In the U.S., only about half of people have two or more credit cards, and a measly 13% of people have five credit cards or more. Me, with my 20-odd cards -- spread across three wallets -- from roughly a dozen issuers, across all four card networks. Given the fantastic worlds, colorful characters, and beautiful scenery that scream "notice me!" from the covers lining the shelves of this gem, the shop's design and exterior are rather nondescript in comparison. The draw of this bookstore is its singular focus on books about illustration, animation, artist sketchbooks, and comic art (or as they like to say, "what other booksellers normally classify as art reference"). There's also an extensive collection of annuals, fanzines, surveys, histories, and tomes on art techniques and instruction. Welcome to the first bookstore in the country (and still one of only two) dedicated entirely to the romance genre.

They pair with the offshoot cultural center next door to offer low-cost/free bilingual arts and literacy programming like mural painting and Mexica (Aztec) dance classes, writing workshops, screenings, and open mic nights. Southern California's oldest and largest bookstore has been the pride of Pasadena since it came on the scene in 1894. And that was before the wine bar was installed or the Art on the Stairwell program kicked off. Among Vroman's shelves are several floors of books in every possible category, a home goods section, one of the best newsstands in the region, and a well-decorated area to park the kids.

Besides being a fantastic bookstore (technically now four bookstores with a second brick and mortar in Pasadena and two branded boutiques at LAX), it has carried on its namesake founder's legacy of philanthropy and community engagement. Vroman's Gives Back has donated a portion of sales to local nonprofits, schools, and charities to the tune of $765,513. Plus, it hosts more than 400 free events annually (including trivia nights, bake-offs, and launch parties), and consistently welcomes top-tier talent such as Salman Rushdie, Sonia Sotomayor, Anne Rice, and David Sedaris.

For each of the three characters, the way in which they do their direct addresses are different. It also lent a little bit to Doug losing his mind in the end. I knew what each of the direct addresses were to me, but I wanted the audience to ask, “What is going on? ” I wanted it to be interesting and something specific, because I always think those are the strongest choices. But I told [the showrunners] that I couldn’t talk to the audience because it didn’t make sense to me. I’ve always been able to wrap my head around everything and I just couldn’t wrap my head around that one, so I talked to them about my idea.

The Shakespearean series finale saw House of Cards leaning into the tone and rules that were set forth by Beau Willimon when he created the Spacey-starring drama back in 2013. But no matter which way she twisted or turned, her dead husband very deliberately haunted her until the bitter end — much like Spacey’s departure cast a shadow over the final season of Netflix’s first original series. The sixth season marks the first of the series without Kevin Spacey, who portrayed lead character Frank Underwood.

The fifth and sixth episodes of this season marked the final directing work of Joel Schumacher. House of Cards was created for television by Beau Willimon. It is an adaptation of a previous BBC miniseries of the same name by Andrew Davies, which was based on the novel by Michael Dobbs.

Zoe and two colleagues, Lucas Goodwin and Janine Skorsky, continue investigating Frank and ultimately locate Rachel. As a protective measure, Frank's aide Doug Stamper brings Rachel to a safe house while Frank lures Zoe to a Metro station and, unseen by witnesses or security cameras, pushes her in front of an oncoming train. Zoe's death compels Janine to abandon the investigation, but Lucas continues the search alone. He solicits the help of a hacker to retrieve Frank's text history. However, the hacker, Gavin Orsay, actually works for Doug and frames Lucas for cyberterrorism.

Tusk sides with Walker at first, leaving Frank no other option than to regain the president's trust as a friend. Walker then calls off his deal with Tusk, who testifies against him. With Walker forced to resign, Frank is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

During the course of the series, 73 episodes of House of Cards were released over six seasons, between February 1, 2013, and November 2, 2018. Frank and Claire allow the kidnappers to speak to the deposed leader of ICO, Yusuf al Ahmadi, after successfully obtaining the release of two of the hostages. Instead of defusing the situation as he agreed, al Ahmadi urges the kidnappers to kill the remaining hostage and broadcast the killing to the public. Meanwhile, Hammerschmidt publishes his story and threatens to end Frank's campaign weeks before the election.

By the season finale, tensions between the Underwoods reach a point where Claire states her intent to leave Frank. After Frank begins his vice presidential duties, Claire becomes close with the First Lady and learns Walker's marriage is strained. Meanwhile, Frank aims to drive a wedge between Walker and Tusk. He meets Xander Feng, a Chinese businessman and ally of Tusk's, to engage in back-channel negotiations that Frank intentionally scuttles at the expense of Tusk's credibility. In the resulting trade war with China, Tusk opposes Walker's efforts to deal with the crisis and begins having a tribal casino funnel money into Republican PACs in retaliation. When Frank discovers that Feng is the source of the donations, he gets Feng to end his partnership with Tusk in exchange for a lucrative contract for a bridge over Long Island Sound.

One day, two men arrive with a coffin, and Nana, the servant in charge of the children, runs in the house and tells Nívea that her brother Marcos has died overseas of a mysterious plague. Nívea and the children, especially Clara, are devastated; however, Barrabás, a puppy of indeterminate breed, is among Marcos’s personal possessions, and Clara quickly falls in love with him. Clara’s sister, Rosa, is engaged to Esteban Trueba, who has been away for two years working in the northern mines. Severo’s political ambitions within the Liberal Party soon pay off, and he runs in the Congressional election to represent a province in the south.

Esteban has a tense relationship with his daughter Blanca but shows genuine love and devotion to his granddaughter Alba. Despite his often violent behavior, he is also devoted to his wife Clara, entering into a state of permanent mourning following her death. As a self-made man who earned all of his wealth from years of work spent improving Tres Marías, Esteban scorns communists and believes them to be lazy and stupid. Later in life, he turns to politics where he spends his money and effort trying to prevent the rising Socialist movement within the country. However, after the military coup he loses much of his power and suddenly has to face the fact that he has become an old and weak man. Yet it is not the loss of power, so much as the injury done to his country, that agonizes the highly patriotic Esteban.

Once Upon A Time

After Blanca is born, Férula is so busy taking care of both Clara and the baby that she has little time to resent Esteban. When Blanca is just a child, Clara and Esteban decide to spend summers at Tres Marías, where Blanca plays with Pedro Segundo’s son, Pedro Tercero. Clara writes in her notebook that Tres María is her “mission” in life, and she takes to spreading her mother’s messages of equality to the peasants.

Esteban Trueba is the central male character of the novel and is one of the story's main narrators along with his granddaughter Alba. In his youth, he seeks the mermaid-like and green-haired Rosa the Beautiful, daughter of Severo and Nívea del Valle, toiling in the mines to earn a suitable fortune so that he can support her. However, she dies by accidental poisoning while he is working in the mines, a cruel stroke of fate that hardens his heart. Although he eventually marries Clara (Rosa's sister and youngest daughter of the Del Valles) and raises a large family, Esteban's stubborn and violent ways alienate all those around him.

Their platonic, familial love, however, is not the only passion portrayed in the novel; sexual, romantic love also abounds. The book proceeds through its several generations of women with reflective names, from Nívea to her daughters Rosa and Clara to Clara’s daughter Blanca and finally to Alba, with an examination of the rewards and difficulties of passion. The first novel by the Chilean writer Isabel Allende (1942– ), The House of the Spirits remains the author’s best-known and most popular work, despite the subsequent success of her following novels, memoirs, and children’s books. Although the book received tremendous critical acclaim and acknowledgment soon after its publication in Spain as La casa de los espíritus in 1982, the road to publication was difficult.

She has famously stated that The House of the Spirits began as a letter to her grandfather, and the book does encapsulate elements of her own family. Allende’s writing quickly turned from an epistolary form to imaginative fiction.

However, when the military coup is set into action, the military men relish their power and grow out of control. Esteban's son Jaime is killed by power-driven soldiers along with other supporters of the government. Esteban helps Blanca and Pedro Tercero flee to Canada, where the couple finally find their happiness. In 1996, following the death of her daughter, Paula, Allende established a charitable foundation in her honor. The foundation has awarded grants to more than one hundred nonprofits worldwide, delivering life-changing care to hundreds of thousands of women and girls. Since its inception in 1975, Book Soup has lived up to its founding claim as the "bookseller to the great and infamous," thanks in large part to its location on the Sunset Strip.

Clara gives birth to a daughter named Blanca and later, to twin boys Jaime and Nicolás. The family, which resides in the capital, stays at the hacienda during the summertime. Upon arriving at Tres Marías for the first time, Blanca immediately befriends a young boy named Pedro Tercero, who is the son of her father's foreman. Blanca and Pedro grow up together as best friends despite them being of two different social and economic classes.

Because of this, Clara said she didn't need to go to school; as a result, Alba was raised at home until she was seven. The novel ends with Esteban's death, and Alba sits alone in the vast Trueba mansion beside his body. But even without the feline ringer, the Los Feliz fixture also happens to be a really good neighborhood general-interest book boutique, especially if you're looking for popular new fiction. Maybe it's the open floor plan, the brightly lit aisles, or the tree growing in the center of the main room. Perhaps it's the nonjudgmental clerks who encourage browsing and love to give recommendations. Possibly it's the well-curated gift and card section, or the fact that Skylight supports the community by carrying local zines and having a big L.A./California section. Esteban loses Rosa to death and shares with her only a kiss; likewise, he never manages to possess Clara completely. Their relationship is passionate but violent, and Clara withdraws into a spiritual world characterized by séances. Similarly, though Blanca’s relationship with Pedro Tercero persists for decades, she imbues and controls it with a sense of caution and restraint. Only Alba seems to love Miguel without reserve, choosing at the end of the novel to remain in a country dominated by a military dictatorship in the hope of eventually gaining a life together with her lover. Clara (one of its translations is the equivalent of English "clear", although it is also a common female name) is the key female figure in the novel. She is a clairvoyant and telekinetic who is rarely attentive to domestic tasks, but she holds her family together with her love for them and her uncanny predictions.

Alba and Pedro are fond of each other, but do not know they are father and daughter, although Pedro suspects this. Nicolás is eventually kicked out by his father, supposedly moving to North America. The story is told mainly from the perspective of two protagonists (Esteban and Alba) and incorporates elements of magical realism. It's only fitting that the Entertainment Capital Of the World has a tome tour de force that specializes in all things film, television, theatre, and celebrities. Open since 1939, it's the holdout on Hollywood Boulevard, once lined with both industry offices and bookstores.

Esteban becomes a senator, but his way of life is threatened by political war between the right-wing conservatives he supports and the Marxist underclasses, and then by a violent government takeover by militarists. Meanwhile, the Trueba children follow very different paths in their choice of lovers and careers. Two generations -- Esteban and his granddaughter, Alba -- tell their family's story, which intertwines with the story of Chile's 20th century political struggles. Alba is arrested in the middle of the night and taken blindfolded to an unknown location, where she is questioned by a man whose voice she immediately recognizes as Esteban García’s. He asks her about Miguel, and when she refuses to talk, she is beaten, tortured, and raped.

In pure hatred of her privileged life and eventual inheritance, García tortures Alba repeatedly, looking for information on Miguel. He rapes her, thus completing the cycle that Esteban Trueba put into motion when he raped Pancha García. When Alba loses her will to live, she is visited by Clara's spirit who tells her not to wish for death, since it can easily come, but to wish to live. Esteban, desperate to save the family honor, gets Blanca to marry the French count by telling her that he has killed Pedro Tercero. At first, Blanca gets along with her new husband, but she leaves him when she discovers his participation in sexual fantasies with the servants.

In the meantime, Esteban grows tired of the closeness of Clara and Férula’s relationship and banishes Férula from the house. In the meantime, more students of spiritualism arrive and move into the house, and Clara spends her days talking to ghosts and levitating furniture. Time passes, and the Truebas continue spending summers at Tres Marías, where Blanca falls madly in love with Pedro Tercero.

The inventory is rare, in-demand, and well cared for and the prices reflect that. Reginald Hennessey may not have set out to build the Western United States' largest art, architecture, and design bookstore when he started in 1963—but that's exactly what he accomplished with later help from his son and grandson. Hennessey + Ingalls is where design firms, academics, and libraries alike turn when they need rare or new releases covering topics ranging from photography to interior design to landscaping. In 2016, the Hennesseys pulled their longtime Santa Monica stakes to join the hip exodus inland to the Arts District downtown, setting up shop on the ground floor of a building with befitting flair. Meyer2Meyer Entertainment is a performing art and immersive event company, specializing in interactive theatrical productions.

Hovering a few blocks north of Hollywood Boulevard is Counterpoint, which has dealt in new and used books and records in the bustling Franklin Village since 1979. The shop's inventory lacks the depth and breadth of other stores on the list, but it's exactly the kind of mom and pop that should be cherished for its quirkiness, character, and a wee bit of attitude. Plus, you're sure to find something you didn't know you needed but now can't live without. Counterpoint is an especially good stop should you be in the market for vintage paperbacks, obscure occult volumes, jazz 33s, soul 45s, or punk 7-inches. When you walk into the brand's first U.S. outpost, it's normal to do a double take to make sure you entered a bookstore and not an art gallery or fancy hotel lobby by mistake.

Unbreakable Arch Bridge With Popsicle Sticks: A Simple DIY Project

bridge popsicle sticks design

Popsicle stick bridges are not just a fun and simple DIY project but they have several applications in various fields. These bridges made with basic materials can be used for educational purposes and even for construction design projects. When designing your unbreakable arch Popsicle stick bridge, you have to consider three major factors; weight, length, and width. Each of these factors will determine the design of the bridge truss, which is essential for creating a stable bridge. The three popular designs include Pratt truss, Warren truss, and Howe truss. A Pratt truss is popular for long bridges, while a Warren truss is suitable for medium-length bridges.

How to build a truss bridge with only Popsicle sticks and glue

Create an unbreakable arch bridge with popsicle sticks with this simple yet impressive project. Another popular bridge design for popsicle sticks is the beam bridge design. Beam bridges consist of a series of horizontal beams that span across two or more supports.

Build-A-Tool Contest

Then cut one stick in half to make smaller pieces for the two ends of the bridge. Which is how much force half of the bottom popsicle stick is holding. No matter how strong the theoretical design of the bridge is, and no matter how strong the individual sticks and cables are, they will be nothing if the connections fail prematurely. Gluing sticks together on their face is fine, but I suggest taking it the extra mile and drilling the sticks and creating tiny doweled connections.

Fun Facts about the Roman Republic to Print and Learn

Light and strong, it can hold more than 100 pounds. I added 5 vertical beams equidistant from one another (about where the vertical beams are in the side supports). I added about 5 sticks to the base of the bridge by applying hot glue to the tip of each of the sticks and placing one of my sides at a 90-degree angle on the glue. Then, I added glue to the other end of the bottom sticks and placed the other side piece at a 90-degree angle.

Step 1: Design Your Bridge.

There are a lot of calculations that go into figuring out if each piece of the truss is under compression or tension. We need to create one more side for the bridge, so repeat Steps 3-5 to build an identical side piece. All of the angled supports are going to angle in toward the center bottom. Add stick 12 (green), in between red and yellow sticks as pictured. It should be on top of the yellow stick and under the red stick.

The connection where the main cable ties meet the top cord of the bridge at the two bridge ends is the most important connection on the structure. If this fails prematurely, the entire structure is doomed. I suggest building a mockup and testing this connection in several iterations to make sure it is very strong.

The beams of the truss work together, either under tension or compression, to hold significant amounts of weight. The other three-stick beams are to be used as the bottom base of the bridge. Lay them parallel to each other and glue sticks going across the bottom connecting them. This would be the road that the car would drive over if it were a really bridge.

A truss bridge takes the weight of whatever is passing over it and transfers it to the piers. What makes a truss different is the efficient way it carries the load using geometry in its favor. Trusses are used for transferring loads from where you don’t want them to where you do. First, we are going to create the two sides of the truss bridge. The Pratt truss bridge has a specific design to it, which you can see in the drawing I made of it.

Popsicle Stick Bridge Tips

This configuration combines strength with resourcefulness of materials and can therefore be generally light and efficient. Popsicle sticks were measured using calipers to determine the width the guides needed to be. A small squared test U was printed with this width to make sure the dimensions allowed a popsicle stick to fit with some room. Truss member angles and the width dimension were then used to create guides for every connection. The joint guides were made specifically to be able to work with any of the joint connections regardless of if there was a vertical or diagonal missing. The side supports also had to be designed to hold at least five stacked popsicle sticks and have cut outs so that the glue would be less likely to stick to the them.

Attach a string to both ends of the bridge and slowly add weight to the center of the bridge. Start with a lightweight item and gradually increase the weight until the bridge reaches its maximum capacity. Record the weight at which the bridge collapses. This super-fun popsicle stick bridge engineering challenge will help enhance your kiddo’s engineering skills no matter their age. This STEM activity only requires craft sticks and play dough. Kids can build a bridge to get acquainted with basic physical forces like tension and compression, plus they’re an excellent idea for science projects and fairs.

The unique design of the truss allows for weight to be distributed in such a way that it can hold a significant amount of weight. The simplest truss bridges are the Howe, the Pratt, and the Warren, named for the engineers who devised them. Structural engineering doesn’t get much simpler. The Warren truss is tried and true, providing a bridge that’s easy to build, strong, and relatively lightweight.

These are the materials that you will need. Something to clamp the popsicle sticks together, like a clothespin. I wouldn't recommend hot glue because it will flex and twist with pressure. Old newspaper will be necessary to put underneath your bridge while drying in case any glue drips. It’s time to test the strength of your arch popsicle stick bridge!

Make a Warren Truss Bridge with Popsicle Sticks

Younger kids will enjoy building and playing with the bridge, while older kids can take the opportunity to learn about how bridges are designed the way they are. Make a simple bridge with duct tape and craft sticks in this fun STEM activity. Kids can think like engineers as they design and build a bridge to support toy cars. Once the base of the popsicle stick bridge is done, glue the side trusses on standing along the edge. I glued it and propped up some books along the side to hold them up while they dried.

(Verify with your instructor is this acceptable.) If you do this, you’ll create very strong, very rigid joints that are unlikely to fail. If you can’t use a dowel, you might still be able to strengthen the joints by drilling them and running a tiny piece of cable through as a tie. Now, we don’t need all the handrails, decking, etc, but what we see is the use of a tensioned cable to create the bottom cord of the truss. The cable is incredible strong and can be run continuous between the supports, reducing the number of connections that can fail in the structure. The other possibility is a weak popsicle stick, which started to fail and then brought the rest of the bridge down with it.

You could also use some clamps to keep them together. Attach the sides together along the top with another triangular pattern. We decided to make a truss bridge with our sticks. A Warren Truss bridge is made with equilateral triangle truss beams that divide out the weight on the bridge.

Build-A-Tool Contest

In statics, we learn about architectural elements such as arches, beams, buttresses, trusses, and vaults. The truss is one of the most important, and it’s widely used in construction. In its simplest form, a truss is a rigid framework of bolted-together triangles. Triangles are inherently strong and stable, and structures made out of them are also strong, rigid, and lightweight. If you want to use a different truss bridge design, go ahead and plan it out now.

Bridges across the globe make up some of the most beautiful landmarks on this Earth. However, it would be quite impossible to bring them to the kitchen table. Luckily, with a few bridge building techniques, a few popsicle sticks, a creative mind, and a few other household items, you can now build a glorious bridge of your very own. My conclusion based on these photos is that the lateral bracing on the left side popped off from the side of the bridge closest to you in the photo.

Step 8: Testing Phase

Burnishing is a technique used by professionals to achieve a certain appearance and is commonly used... Scientific American suggests exploring different shapes to find the strongest one for your project. Its applications range from STEM education to art projects and DIY home decor. Have one person gently lift the blue sticks while the other person slides in a second bamboo skewer. Younger kids will love it too, but may need more help.

Step 5: Get Bigger...

Just be careful to do proper testing of your model before attending any competition. Nevertheless, while participating, save up your time and resources to build a fresh one if anything goes wrong with your tried and tested prototype. Starting with a small weight, increase the load gradually while placing them at different points of the bridge to keep the weight well-distributed. You can use anything from small buckets of water to barbell weights and concrete blocks. If it fails, add reinforcements at the points of breakage. We first built our bridge without paint, and then decided to paint it because the sticks were blending in with the rug when we took pictures.

We were provided with about 60 sticks, a cushion of office pins and a tube of super-glue. I have attached a picture of the bridge we constructed, that eventually won the first place. I’m sorry I don’t have a better picture to show you. To connect a popsicle stick bridge, you can lay long sticks across the struts and glue them into place. If the sticks are not long enough, you can join them together by cutting and gluing them, using a stick for support at the bottom. Firstly, you will need to gather enough Popsicle sticks to build your bridge truss.

Video Tutorial for a Popsicle Stick Truss Bridge

A Howe truss, on the other hand, is best for short bridges. Popsicle sticks are a fantastic building material because they are super cheap. However, we discovered that they aren’t quite long enough to make this bridge work. I used 6 sticks and some hot glue to create longer sections. Like all mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineers, I learned how to analyze structures early in my engineering education.

Then decide the number of sticks you will need to build it. You’ll also want a strong pair of shears to cut some of the sticks. Go back with the hot glue and apply some to all the points that had been glued done previously. One particular weakness was taken into account. Make sure to have a spacious and flat working surface.

Kids can build a strong popsicle stick bridge using colored popsicle sticks and school glue to glue sticks.. It is a simple way to teach about how important structure is to strength. To make an arch bridge using popsicle sticks, you will need to follow certain steps. Firstly, create a blueprint or design of the bridge.
